Low-VOC Paint Explained
What VOCs are, why they matter inside Omaha homes, and how to pick safer paint.
Indoor air quality is a bigger deal in Omaha than people realize. Our long heating season means homes are sealed up for five-plus months a year, so anything that off-gasses inside has time to build up. Low-VOC paint is one of the simplest ways to reduce that load — without giving up durability or color choice.
Why VOCs matter, especially in winter
Traditional high-VOC paints can off-gas for weeks. In summer you can open windows; in a Nebraska January, you can't. Low-VOC formulas reduce that exposure dramatically and dissipate within hours rather than weeks.
Low-VOC vs. zero-VOC
Low-VOC paints contain under 50 g/L of VOCs; zero-VOC products contain under 5 g/L. Note that tints can re-introduce small amounts of VOCs even into a zero-VOC base — for highly sensitive clients we use specific zero-VOC tint systems.
- Benjamin Moore Natura — zero-VOC, zero-emissions even after tinting
- Sherwin-Williams Harmony — low-VOC, anti-microbial, formaldehyde-reducing
- Benjamin Moore Aura — low-VOC, premium scrub-resistant finish
When to specifically request zero-VOC
Nurseries, bedrooms for kids with asthma or allergies, projects in occupied homes during winter, and households with pregnant residents or immunocompromised family members.
